 Oklahoma HB 2557
Interesting legislation trying to be pushed through in Oklahoma. One buck a year total is the way I read it. Here is the entire bill. http://webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/2009-10HB/HB2557_int.rtfD. No person may take more than one antlered whitetail deer and one antlered mule deer annually, regardless of which open season the deer is taken. Antlerless whitetail deer and mule deer may be taken on any day of any open season established by the Commission subject only to a total bag limit for the season or year as established by the Commission.

 Re: Oklahoma HB 2557
Hmmm. Sounds like maybe things are getting ready to change in the Okie state. Was 3 bucks, now 2 bucks and getting ready to be 1 buck. This might not be a bad thing. Here is my reasoning....This will hopefully force people to become a little more selective about which deer they are pulling the trigger on. Our neighbors to the north practice the one buck bag limit and the record books speak for themselves. Hopefully this will help to increase the buck to doe ratio state wide and make for an overall healthier deer herd. There are other avenues that could have been explored including antler restrictions ( which has been suggested on a trial basis but not put into action ) and the earn a buck method ( hunters must check in a doe to " earn their buck tag ). The drop from 3 bucks to 2 really didn't effect to many people because only a hand full would harvest bucks during each of Oklahoma's seasons. Dropping it from 2 to 1 will effect a fairly high number of hunters and will have more of an impact. I would be very curious to see the numbers from one year to the next if this gets impleminted. I would bet the buck harvest numbers will decrease by between 10 to 15 thousand animals.

It will be interesting Brian. I think I am for it also. Although I doubt it passes as the bill is really long and has alot of other stuff in it. I will follow it and see what happens. I am working in South Dakota this week. What a great state! People are nice and hunting is the norm here.

And for some areas to choose betweena mulie and a whitetail. Think that might upset a few. But overall, not sure. What are the #'s of deer in the state?

 Re: Oklahoma HB 2557
deb, it reads so you can take a whitetail and a mulie. We average around 100k deer harvest a year total. I think they say our herd is around 500k. There are few Mule deer in our state so that will not affect many.

 Re: Oklahoma HB 2557
How many hunters? Res and nonres? That will determine if going to a 1 buck limit is helpful or hurtful. The DNR in WI (although hunters do not agree at all) say the deer pop is 1,000,000 prehunt and around 700,000 post hunt and they want the #'s down even more. Hunters would probably say there might be 500,000 prehunt. There the limit is 1 per bow and 1 per gun. # of does vary in the state and if you are in the CWD area, you can kill everything you see. Does, bucks (no limit) and white and albino's. In the North Wooods, you are lucky to see a deer now. What few there are, the wolves are killing. The DNR is happy.

 Re: Oklahoma HB 2557
as a bill to be passed into law, I would be completely against it. once it hits the books it's gonna be tough to change. as a department of game and fish or whatever oklahoma calls it regulation it wouldn't be a bad thing.

 Re: Oklahoma HB 2557
I sent the congressman who wrote this bill an email. I received a response from him asking me to tell other people about this bill and to email him with your opinion on it. He is going to present the emails to the chairman of the wildlife committee. I also had to mention legalizing leashed tracking dogs in Oklahoma in my email. His email is Mark.McCullough@okhouse.gov
