Post going green mineral station
We spent most of the day this past Saturday working on the food plots in western Oklahoma. We topped off our protein feeders, did a rain dance because the chicory was looking a little dry, changed batteries and memory cards in the cameras and built a covered mineral station. We filmed some the fun for MyArcheryHunt.com so look for that in the future.

Here is what we used to make the mineral station. We used an old cattle trough feeder that somebody had left on one of our hunting properties for the container. We put a few small holes in the bottom to allow for drainage if it should get wet. We used scrap 2x4 to build a frame that was slightly longer and wider than the trough. We made the front taller that the back so that when the roof was on water would run off. We made sure to allow for enough room under the roof and between the vertical post of the frame to allow for big antlers to get to the mineral. Our landowner had some scrap tin from an old barn that we used for the roof. We overlapped the tin to keep it water tight. We put this up in just a few hours and the only cost to us was the nails and screws we used.

You can use straight mineral but what we like to do is mix the mineral 50/50 with corn. We put 150lbs of mineral and 150 lbs of corn in the trough and mixed them together. This seems to ensure that the deer will be sure to get the benefits of the mineral. We have a camera up and I will share the photos as we check the cameras. I will take pictures of the mineral station for anybody interested.

Good Hunting

Brian

Would love to see the pictures Brian. One thing to think about is something
we did in NW Oklahoma on food plots. We got a plastic water tank and
a cheap pump and a fire hose(bet you can find those). We made the plots where
we could water them and it really worked good. We just dropped a trailer and filled the
water when we got there and once it filled up we drenched the plots. In dry years, our
plots really brought them in. I think my son spent a good portion of his younger years
on the back of a trailer spraying plots with a fire hose  .

Those are great ideas guy! We just put a protein feeder up at my honey hole and ready to put in a late food plot.

I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the station Brian... and the game cam pics too.

Carey - can't say enough about your brilliant yet simple solution to water for food plots! Sounds really easy! We actually have a tank right close to our food plot spot. I hunt ducks off of it too. But I could easily drop a fire hose into the tank and use that water!
