 Beat the snow
Got to go hunting the monday night, before the snow hit. We dropped dogs after dark, and hunted for a couple hours with no success. Finally Bart, one of my buddy's jagdterriers winded off the front of the ranger and disappeared into the cedars. We heard him bark a couple of times and sent my two dogs, Blue and Belle to help out. We heard a few more barks and some grunting so we sent in the catch dogs from there. On our way into the catch I could hear other hogs busting through the cedars around me. We made it to the dogs, sent my Blue dog on, and dispatched a little sow. We started back out to the ranger and heard Blue start to bay. Bart rolled out to him at the first bark. The Garmin said he was already 380 yards out, so we loaded back up and drove closer. We got real close to the bay and were able to send my catch dog, Chico in to catch the hog. On the way to them we could only hear intermittent sounds of a struggle, where in cedars that thick it should have been fairly loud. I broke out of the trees and found myself on the bank of a large tank, with the dogs caught on a nice sow about ten feet out from the bank. Probably thirty five or forty degrees, and water deep enough that the dogs had to swim every once in a while when they couldn't touch. Yay! Lucky for us, or me rather (the unwritten rule is, your catch dog, your swim) the dogs and hog started inching toward the bank. They got close and Rex hollered " Just grab Chico!" so I held onto Rex with one hand, and leaned out over the water with the other and grabbed the back strap on Chico's vest. They were in a deep part, and were all swimming, so it was easy to pull the whole works to shore until Rex could grab the hog and stick it. Rex took the dogs back to the ranger while I gutted the hog, then we got it loaded up and called it a night. I hung the hog up when I got home, it was past midnight and well cool enough to keep it fresh, so I caught some shut eye and cleaned it the next morning. Here's a picture of the sow caught in the tank. Getting some hog cleaning advice from a bulldog pup
